hexmix: Ethan's hands from the Ethan Must Die end screen with a green-tinged heart above them. (efan - heart on my sleeve)
started playing Outlast on stream last week and it's been very interesting to see the influence it has had on other horror games, most especially RE7. we like to joke about Capcom stealing from things its devs like on stream but also...lmao.

[mild spoilers for both Outlast and Resident Evil 7 to follow]

even at a surface level, the similarities between Outlast and RE7 are pretty obvious: first person [survival] horror game + RE7's opening being framed the same. in 7 we hear Ethan's conversation with a man i think everyone assumes to be his coworker/friend, whereas Outlast gives us the whistleblower email.

[gotta sidenote to say that joking with chat about Ethan printing out the email he got from Mia and then like 2 weeks later starting Outlast and seeing Miles pull out a printed out email...it's incredibly funny. i genuinely think it's probably just coincidence and Capcom's just leaning into notes-as-exposition as it always does, but having an entire conversation about "why the hell did Ethan print out that email, who does that?" and then starting up Outlast and seeing Miles whip out a printed email it's just like OF COURSE that's why Capcom had him do that, it was in Outlast, put it in the game! lmao.]

real RE-heads who have also seen the concept art for 7 know that Ethan was intended to be an investigative journalist, which also isn't unique to Outlast but i NEED to list it here due to how many resemblances there actually are.

like, and i am cheating a little here by bringing in 8, but do pls consider the resemblance between Miles' outfit and Ethan's in RE8. i also think there's enough similarities between some of Ethan's one-liners (again, more heavily referencing 8 here than 7) and some of Miles' notes--the one you get after killing Trager stands out to me as a good example. that kind of character/personality also isn't unique to Outlast, but we gotta tally these things all the same.

of course, having finished the Dr Trager section last night, the thing that is on the forefront of my thoughts is: Miles' poor hands.

people have rightfully brought up Texas Chainsaw Massacre in comparison with the dinner scene in 7, but seeing the scene with Trager and Miles i also can't help but see the similarities there too, chiefly: Miles strapped to a wheelchair you have to break free of in the EXACT same way Ethan has to break free from the chair he's been tied to. and this of course following gruesome violence perpetrated against the character who is completely immobile and unable to fight back.

all the damage Ethan takes to his hands is also a well-established joke in the fandom, and the shock you feel watching what Trager does to Miles probably can't be overstated, especially if you were playing these games chronologically (unlike me). it's, like much of this, the kind of thing that can be pure coincidence, but it's also kind of an open secret that the RE devs just yoink shit they like from other media, so i also feel like nothing i'm saying here is really that far-fetched.

also, one more incredibly minor thing: compare Trager's oversized scissors/shears with Jack's frankenstein'd weapon in 7. just sayin'.

seeing as how killing Trager is as far as i've gotten in Outlast, i can't say much more, but damn am i curious to see where the game goes. and, to a lesser extent, see how much more Capcom took from it lmao.

anyway, dunking on Capcom aside, i am liking Outlast, insofar as i am capable of 'liking' horror games, which really just means i can appreciate the atmosphere and gameplay and judge the jumpscares & the way the game maintains tension, etc. i'm thinking particularly of the sequence where you're running from those two patients and having to push shelves out of/into the way. the game does such a good job of funneling you where you need to go, like as panicked as i was (as i always am in sequences like that in games) the routes i took felt "natural," insofar as enemy movements were choreographed such that you end up reacting instinctively. it just felt very well done to me.

in comparison: see the Laura fight in The Evil Within that i nearly ragequit. actually see any of the sections with Laura; i don't think anything was ever instinctively clear lmao.

we'll see if i still feel this positive about it going forward, but at the very least i know it can't be worse than Evil Within :p
hexmix: Powers Boothe as Curly Bill in Tombstone in sepia tones with the text "Well, bye." (tombstone - bye)
way too tired and in too much pain currently to be engaging with this on tumblr so i'm tackling it here.

re: this post and Heisenberg's purported Nazi paraphernalia

the main thing to note here if this person really wanted to push for this argument is that Sturm is lifted directly from the film Frankenstein's Army where he's a Nazi creation. and by lifted i mean that literally, Capcom just straight up plagiarized the film.

they do that a lot, actually. in fact Heisenberg's entire design is stolen from the short film Rakka.

there's also the big obvious Nazi connections the real life Karl Heisenberg had. like genuinely you can draw these connections without pretending to be fucking sherlock holmes (lol).

now, i haven't looked into the tank and weaponry you see around his factory, but i HAVE looked into the plane turbine that's attached to Sturm and it's an American sea plane, so like 100% not going to put any stock into even the barest scrap of anything from the environment being attributable to character building (in a RE game? hah!), but i saw other ppl replying to this person saying that there's a mixture of German and American weaponry in and around the factory, and i'm willing to take them at their word considering that Capcom's design philosophy when it comes to the RE games is "does this spark joy? does it rock? is it capital C Cool?"

like friend, it's really not that deep. if they wanted Heisenberg to be a Nazi he would OVERTLY be a Nazi. i think what's more likely is that they're picking up influences from things that do lean heavily in that direction (once again: Sturm) and just dumping them wholesale into the game bc that's just how the RE devs make these games. typically tho it's just B movie action schlock.

i'm about to get real mean now and definitely lose the Nice Award for this week tho so let's put the rest behind a cut.

i'd blame the meanness on the pain but lbr i do have Hater Tendencies )

anyway, all this to say that i think the fixation OP has on the flashlight is based in some sort of paranoia & that if they really wanted to prove Heisenberg was a Nazi they honestly could have done a much better job. this shit is like when my students would try to cheat but they'd be REALLY BAD at it so i just ended up more insulted than anything.
hexmix: Chris from RE8 looking serious in his turtleneck and blazer ensemble from the opening with a purple background and pink text that reads "on point like a laser" (turtleneck and blazer)
here's a little quadruple drabble i wrote for [personal profile] lightmod, who wanted "a drabble of what the fuck happens to chris after he is hit full force by a giant fish." my first thought was "Hound Wolf gathers around him with blow dryers so he's all dried out in time for his next cutscene" but i ended up going with something serious instead :p

also featuring Dion bc he was also slapped with fish )
hexmix: Ethan Winters with his back to the camera and castle Dimitrescu from RE8 in the distance (efan)
written for the April 20th prompt "a lot of boxes" for [community profile] spring_renewal. takes place during 'all i need is some sunshine' sometime after ch12 and before ch18. listened to my own fanmix on repeat while writing this, and the title does in fact come from the Pina Colada song lmao.

the prompt of course reminded me of Karl cleaning out the shed in ch12, and Karl harassing Ethan with mixed tapes he found there is something i'd been wanting to write for a while c:

Title: nobody's poet
Fandom: Resident Evil Village
Character(s)/Pairing(s): Ethan Winters/Karl Heisenberg
Content Notes: none (spoilers for the rest of 'all i need is some sunshine')
Prompt Being Filled: Any, Any, a lot of boxes [April 20th]

so the working title for this fic is "beatification, canonization, benediction" and the inspiration for it was a nivansfield comic i read where chris is more or less haunted by this kind of deification of piers. and it's really fucking neat but i wanted to do something with a (very) warped misinterpretation of catholic saints.

mostly tho i wanted to torment chris c:<

It's the first time he's been in a Catholic church... )

aight so this one is super self-indulgent. it comes from me thinking about how the relationship that karl and ethan end up with at the end of my fic "in the spirit that i crave" would only be possible as long as ethan lost his memory, that if their roles were flipped and ethan found a karl with memory loss in a karl megamycete brain construct he'd basically go thru the whole thing all press X to doubt. he'd never trust him.

so then i thought "well, what would get him to trust/help karl?" and then thought "if he didn't recognize it was karl," which meant kid!karl, which meant i was then seriously thinking about a reverse au for my own fic. self-indulgent, as i said.

anyway here's what i have of that c:

i unfortunately have like 4 time loop fic ideas for wintersberg alone but here's the only one i've written anything for. the first bit is from inktober 2021 (the prompt was "crystal") and the second is from inktober 2022 (prompt was "bat").

25000 lei. )

sometime between middle and high school i read Dave Duncan's Sky of Swords and the concept of the king's blades have lived rent free in my head ever since. if you've never read any of the books it's basically a magically bound group of swordsmen sworn to protect their lord with their lives. the bond makes them want to stick very, very close, it's a compulsion, and though it will gradually wear off in time blades who have lost their lord will still sometimes go insane due to the bond/compulsion freaking out. the ritual binding blades to their lord is also pretty rad tbqh.

so anyway of course i wanted to do a knight/lord wintersberg au using blades. i have a very extensive outline for this fic but only a few excerpts; two from inktobers (2021, 2022) and one that i churned out as if possessed. they're all below the cut, in chronological order as they would appear in the fic. heisenberg's characterization in this is very much not what i typically go with. ethan's isn't really either for that matter. some dubcon elements that are not explicit/emphasized in the excerpts below but which would become very much so in the fic itself.

so the actual 2022 inktober prompt was "scallop" but i didn't like it so i grabbed "radio" from the 2020 prompt list instead. it's just a coincidence that it perfectly works with another au idea i had which was based off an article i read about re8 A BILLION YEARS AGO. don't have it on hand but it was pure speculation based on trailers/game footage released before the game itself was out and it posited that heisenberg might be an ally, and furthermore than he might be the one to have brought ethan to the village for help (this was before there was knowledge of rose i believe).

anyway that stuck with me for obvious reasons and i've wanted to do a "heisenberg pulls a castiel and harasses ethan thru electronics in order to get him to be his vessel the village" au and used this prompt as an excuse to write the opening.

this au is set very early after ethan and mia arrive in romania, before rose was born. eventual wintersberg.

The first time he could distinctly remember it happening... )

another inktober prompt, this one "scurry," and i was pretty shamelessly using it to write a scene from a reverse AU i'd like to do. the premise being: entirely human/unMiranda'd karl heisenberg tracks the signal of a robot he loaned the connections out to the middle-of-nowhere louisiana and the baker house. mostly though i just like writing about swamps :V

eventual wintersberg.

The signal was still coming through strong... )

WIP from inktober 2022. prompt was "gargoyle" so i decided to lean into the story of St Romaine and Rouen a little bit. just a bit. i took a tremendous amount of liberties. intended to be eventual wintersberg or potentially chris/ethan/heisenberg, i haven't decided yet.

Ethan stood right where Chris had left him... )
