fic update + ao3 shit
Mar. 3rd, 2024 10:06 pmgoing to be spending the next few days going thru the next three chs of spirit hat and finalizing edits. lightmode finished with the beta for them so now it's down to cleaning things up!! i'll probably be posting those chapters here as well, just locked. i'd like to go ahead and post the next chapter to ao3 as well, but i'm held back both bc i'd like to have everything finalized before i start posting there again (it just stresses me out to be trying to finish writing/editing while also maintaining any kind of update schedule) and because, well. issues with ao3 itself.
idk if anyone remembers the stuff from last year with the volunteer who ended up quitting bc ao3 decided it was harassment for them to have "from the river to the sea" in their slack name, but i was thinking about it again recently bc i'd never heard what ao3's response was and uh. it sucks, tbh. they maintain (implicitly) that "from the river to the sea" inherently counts as harassment bc they have a "politics only in the politics channel" policy. so basically just demonstrating a willingness to shield a bunch of fucking zionists who got butthurt about someone saying "free palestine."
(there's a bit more to it than that, but it all really just makes the volunteer who ended up quitting sound incredibly based tbh.)
anyway, the whole thing left a sour taste in my mouth and i feel disgusted with the otw in general. i realize that ao3 is not making any money off me, and that switching platforms doesn't mean that whatever new platform i find will be free of the same bullshit, but i also just feel pretty helpless/useless regarding the genocide the US is not only permitting but actively encouraging, and just continuing to use an archive that has vocalized its support of zionists when i have alternatives...fuckin feels bad man.
and like switching archives isn't going to do anything to make the otw reconsider its position, i am well aware of this, but it might make at least a few people pay more attention. idk idk. it's just fanfic anyway, it doesn't mean anything, i just also wish this whole thing hadn't been so easily swept under the rug.
but in the meantime i'll be posting chapters here i guess. going to continue weighing what i want to do. i did go ahead and make a squidgeworld account, and it was really nice seeing the TOS had a firm "no AI scraping permitted" policy after the BS going on with tumblr right now. like i also understand that that kind of policy means nothing bc AI companies will just scrape whatever they want without permission/consent, but it's also just rad to see a website that isn't going to just sell all your shit without your permission, or by opting you in without notifying you until after the fact.
(pretty sure there's a new bullet on the TOS that's aimed right at that flamethrower chick that threw the big tantrum about leaving ao3 too, which is also just deeply funny to me.)
